Our Parents

Antioch School parents are part of the school community in many different ways. In the past, volunteer parents have helped in special and day-to-day activities such as bringing birthdays and holidays to the classrooms; doing lighting, video taping and costume designing for play; helping at work bees; and coordinating and helping with fundraisers.

We have been "bus" drivers, book finders, interesting event suggesters, thinkers, doers, and helpers in ways that reflect our own diverse personalities and interests. As gardeners, photographers, teachers, writers, cooks, musicians... many of us have brought our own special knowledge, skills, or expertise to the classroom – and to the school as a whole.

We also have the very real opportunity to be a part of the community by going to Board meetings and contributing, by being Parent Coordinators for the classroom, by serving on Board committees and as Board members.

Antioch School parents also assist by helping teachers better understand their children – and their needs – through regularly scheduled conferences or whenever concerns arise. We assist in this way, realizing at the same time that our children are members of a group of many diverse individuals in which the needs of all – and the group itself – must be considered, answered, and often weighed to find a workable balance.

In this, and in so many others ways, we at The Antioch School function together as an extended family. Understanding and caring for one another is a crucial element in any family living, and this is true at The Antioch School as well. As parents, teachers, children and staff, we all depend on one another to help nurture a healthy school environment through regular, honest and caring communication.

Parent Time Commitment

All parents are asked to contribute 20 hours of time to the school each year. There are many opportunities for parents to give time, energy and assistance to enhance our program for our children.

Some examples of volunteer jobs are: driving for field trips, serving on committees, helping with playground maintenance and Work Bees, Swim Mom or Dad, Adopt a Job, and special activities with children. Parents are asked to track their volunteer time in the Volunteer Log provided in the school packet or available at the office. (Download one here.)

Parents unable to commit to twenty hours may make a donation to the school of $10 minimum per volunteer hour.
